Playing polo at University
In terms of getting involved with UBPC and learning to play the sport, we usually first encounter and sign up students within their first couple of weeks at the University of Birmingham. This year the university will be holding the annual Sports and Fitness Fair on the 21st September at 10am-4pm in the Munrow Sports Centre. We strongly urge all interested students to attend the sports fair where we shall have a stand. Here you can speak to our team, ask any questions and crucially sign up to a taster session. Our taster sessions will be held at Rugby Polo Club and transport will be arranged, the sessions will be open to all students, regardless of riding ability or polo experience and it is here we hope you will discover just how fun playing polo is! If you are unable to attend the sports fair, then feel free to get in touch through the contact form, by email or through our Facebook page.
Once you have attended a taster session and you decide to continue with playing polo for the rest of the year, you will be able to become a member via the university’s online sports portal.
Typically players will train weekly on Wednesday at Rugby Polo Club for 1 hour, though intensive days of training are held for a longer amount of time closer to the tournament season. Some of our players also arrange extra training sessions on other days of the week if they want to.
Contrary to popular belief, players do not need to own a pony or bring a pony with them to university in order to play polo! Though if you own a polo pony and you would like to keep it at the club where we train, then do not hesitate to contact Rugby Polo Club which offers livery as a facility.
